What is Lexile?

The Lexile measure refers to the level of a reader's competency, as well as a book's difficulty.

For Books:
Books are evaluated by using an algorithm that measures text complexity including-
  • sentence length
  • word frequency
  • syntactic/ semantic challenges
For Students:
Students can be evaluated using one of some 65 assessments.  There is no one single special "Lexile test," so your best resource would be your child's teacher.

Another way to determine if a book is a good fit for your child is to use the Rule of Five- if your child makes five or more mistakes on a single page, find an easier book! (more on read aloud and partner reading later)

Students have shown the highest level of comprehension when they are reading between 50 below and 100 above their given Lexile number.  (For example if my child reads at a 300L I would look for titles from 250-400)
